Payne Mausoleum

About Payne Mausoleum

The Payne family lived in Newhill Hall from when it was built in 1785 by landowner and farmer John Payne, whose family can be traced back in this area even further to the 1650’s. He built the home for himself, his wife Sarah Payne, and their seven children. It was a grand house with picturesque gardens and a mausoleum.

Newhill Hall became home to many generations of the Payne family. A notable member of the family is Dr. Henry Payne, who practiced his profession in Barnsley and was a keen historian and naturalist. His sons were John Henry Payne, an analytical chemist, botanist and advocate for international disarmament, and Richard Payne, a Justice of the Peace and polo pony breeder.

While Newhill Hall has since been demolished and the area turned into a park, the mausoleum remains here as the last reminder of the important part the Payne family played in the history of Wath.
